Rain
Playing "Rain"
How'd it come about?
This is a tune that I wrote around 2006. I started off recording rain outside my basement window.
Then, I eventually ended up duplicating the rain tracks and panning them to give it some depth (best when heard
through headphones). The keyboards were next to be recorded. I had this funky old beater keyboard I was borrowing
from a friend. The droning whirling sound is actually a guitar that I sculpted effects for to give it this drowning sound.
I found that one of the keyboard progressions I created sounded great if I reversed it (starts around 1:26 minutes in). You'd be surprised
how many of the parts that sound like keyboard are actually guitar tracks that I warped with effects.
The lyrics are something my friend Josh and I came up with together. The vocal recording was interesting. There is actually
a version of this song that has Josh on vocals. Both versions are off key, and the current version had the pitch corrected, but I lost that
because I hadn't mixed the tune down with the effect in place before I gave the computer away. It gave the vocals this cool shifty feel
to them... which is gone... oh well. The vocals were comped down from about 20 takes. The music bed underneath them took about a week to get
the way I wanted it (probably 10 tracks of different stuff, layered). The overall mix consisted of about 40 tracks and was a nightmare to finish. It
took the better part of a couple months to finish because I would dread having to deal with the technical issues involved.
