How'd it come about?

This is a tune that I wrote around 2006. My friend and I were just jamming around and came up with the main guitar riff. I started playing around with it and spent a good deal of time trying to get it to sound aggressive yet smooth. I don't feel that I got it to be what I had in my head, unfortunately. This is one of the songs that was recorded during my "layers phase". That is to say that I started adding so many tracks and layers to the sounds that my computer wasn't able to handle rendering all of them in real-time. So the mixing of these tracks required a good deal of, uhm, ...patience and creativity. After many months of experimentation and re-recording (including a version with vocals, I had something that I could enjoy). Unfortunately, my knowledge of how to use compression to get the right feeling out of a track is still lacking, and so this track suffers. In the end, I had to compromise on the final mix because the computer I was using was being replaced.

I love the breakdown in the middle. Its like someone slams on the brakes and you are floating in the air. There is this churning/chugging going on with one of the guitars (actually 3 separate tracks), while a lead (another 3 tracks at different octaves) slides through smooth progressions. I'm also excited at how the solo sounds in the mix. Like a real guitar player recorded it... I'll never be able to remember or recreate the effects chain on that one, for sure. And the end was done by taking the muted guitar from the middle and running it through this crazy effects chain in GuitarRig.
